Neighbourhood Watch 2

by Greg Freeman

Fancy a bit of Ayckbourn? Fellow members of Woking Writers Circle have kindly allowed me to use this website to promote the latest play being performed soon by Send Amateur Dramatic Society. It’s Neighbourhood Watch by Alan Ayckbourn, his 75th and one of his more recent plays; it was premiered in Scarborough in 2011. Back then the Guardian’s chief theatre critic Michael Billington wrote: “The piece is highly ambitious, biliously funny and right on the button.” If anything, issues that Ayckbourn touched on back in 2011 as examples of suburban paranoia – or justified fears? – are even more relevant today. Basically, the decapitation of a garden gnome leads to sex, violence, arson and acrimony, after a vigilante scheme goes somewhat out of control. In the cast photo, maybe you can spot me as the retired security guard? We’re performing at the Lancaster Hall, Send, on Thursday to Saturday June 6-8. Tickets are £8.
